Organizing Digital Pictures

As you probably already know, I'm a sucker for things that are well-organized. I love being organized and having things run efficiently. However, I have minor panic attacks when things are not very organized. About every two months I freak out because I hate the way I'm storing, filing, and backing them up. If you have any solutions to storing photos, please LET ME KNOW!

Here are the main areas I struggle with:
  • To delete or not to delete? Do you delete photos from your memory card immediately after uploading them to your computer?
  • Back-ups: Is it wise to have the photos stored in two places (for example, your PC and a flash drive)? If so, how do you make this happen?
  • It's all in a name: How do you label your photos? Do you include the date in the title?
  • Picasa: this seems like an amazing tool to use, but I'm not sure how to make the organizational piece work for me.

Hi Lisa, if I may help, these are the solution I adopted in my case (and I have tons of photos...)
Feel free to contact me should you have any question.

1) I format my memory card once I successfully transferred my pics onto the PC. It is too much of an hassle when I forget that and I happen to have duplicated pics when I download the card again. So I think it's better to start off with a formatted card each time a download is made.

2) Backups: I use 2 solutions: I have a mirrored disc ("RAID 1" configuration) inside my PC on which I store the raw files and I am using an online backup service, like www.mozy.com.

3) labeling and organizing: Adobe Lightroom rules! if you are into mac, go for Aperture. You won't regret either of these solutions, albeit those are rather professional softwares.

um...flickr...duh!

jk

but seriously www.flickr.com

Oh and Peter has some great ideas I think we might be starting at our house too in the upcoming months-however they involve buying server space to host your backups for you so maybe not the cheapest route.

When you are freakin' just remember we are the only generation to date with as many photos as we have. Even if you saved 2 a year in a special place you'd have enough to fill your memo board at your funeral. And after that a few will be shuffled to Ry, Molla and the TX girls and the rest will be sold an antique flea market in Elko, MN. So chill!:)

Unless you have auto biography plans in your future, then you should save more!

so the perfect solution is an external memory hard drive. i bought a 200GB for Sweden, and it's perfect! it's so small and sleek. it's about 4 inches by 2 inches by 1/2 inch thick. when i save my pictures, i save each day or trip, depending on how many pics it is, in a separate folder. i label the folder first with the date and then the description, "09.28.08 Royal Palace" Then I store the individual folders in bigger folders that are simply labeled by month, so 1.08, 2.08, etc... and the months are in a folder by year. That's the easiest way i've found to store my 10 GB of pics that i've taken already!! you gotta think bigger into the future when organizing pictures...this probably won't last too long either...but it will for my year away! i'm stil learning picasa....i'm sure you could teach me about it...
